Description

The tomb marks the resting place of three siblings: John, Jane, and Elizabeth Brass. In January 1683, the children were left at their home at High Hill House Farm in nearby Ferryhill while their parents went out to visit friends. While they were gone, the children were brutally murdered with an axe by their father's farm servant, Andrew Mills.  Mills was quickly apprehended, tried, and executed. His body was "hung in chains" (gibbeted) on a nearby moor in full view of the site of his crime—a spot that became known in local folklore as "Andrew Mill's Stob". The tomb's surface features a long, chilling inscription that recounts the murders committed by Mills, as well as his subsequent execution and gibbeting. The inscription concludes with a haunting epitaph and a biblical warning: “Reader remember Sleeping we were Slain And here we sleep till we must rise again. Whoso sheddeth Man's Blood By Man shall his Blood be shed. Thou shalt do no murder”
