Description
This monument marks the alleged spot where King William II (William Rufus) was fatally struck by a stray arrow fired by Sir Walter Tyrrel during a royal hunting trip in August 1100. Originally marked by an oak tree and later a stone, it is now encased in cast iron to protect it. While officially recorded as a hunting accident, enduring historical theories and local folklore suggest it was an orchestrated political assassination.
