The King Stone (Rollright Stones)

-1500 · The King Stone, Little Rollright, Oxfordshire

Description

Part of the famous Rollright Stones complex, this single solitary monolith is steeped in profound local folklore. According to legend, a Danish king and his army were turned to stone by a local witch. The king, who was told he would rule England if he could see Long Compton in the valley below in seven strides, was petrified just as his view was blocked by an earthen mound, becoming the solitary King Stone.
