The Hanging Stone

1700 · The Hanging Stone, Holford, Quantock Hills, Somerset

Description

A prominent stone in the Quantock Hills steeped in macabre local folklore. The legend tells of a sheep rustler who, while fleeing with a stolen sheep tied around his neck, stopped to rest by the stone. As he leaned against it, the sheep slipped over the opposite side of the rock. The rope pulled tight, and the man was strangled by his own stolen prize.
