The Stanton Drew Weddings (The Cove)
-2500 · The Cove, Stanton Drew, Somerset
Description
Part of the Stanton Drew stone circles, this triad of massive standing stones known as 'The Cove' is deeply entwined with a famous South West legend. According to local folklore, a wedding party was celebrating late into a Saturday night. When the clock struck midnight and the musicians refused to play into the Sabbath, a mysterious stranger in black—the Devil—offered to play the fiddle. The guests were forced to dance relentlessly until dawn, when they were permanently turned to stone for their sins.
