Lilla Cross

Description
Believed to be the oldest cross on the North York Moors, this monument is named after Lilla, a loyal thegn who supposedly saved King Edwin of Northumbria from an assassin in 626 AD. Set atop a prehistoric burial mound known as Lilla Howe, the stone has acted as a vital boundary marker for the estates of Whitby Abbey since the 12th century.
