The Ditton Murder Stone (Edward Culshaw)

Description
On January 19, 1784, house carpenter Edward Culshaw was shot in the head and robbed along the road of Ditton Bank Farm. This case is historically significant as one of the earliest recorded examples of forensic "CSI-style" policing; a torn scrap of song sheet used as wadding in the murder weapon perfectly matched a piece found in the pocket of the prime suspect, leading to his conviction. Originally placed at the roadside, the stone was relocated to St Michael's Church gardens in 1949 after suffering vandalism.
