Description
Marking the grave of 20-year-old Mary Ashford, who was found drowned in a pit following a local dance in 1817. The prime suspect, Abraham Thornton, was acquitted and subsequently invoked the medieval "trial by battle" during an appeal, exploiting a forgotten legal loophole that parliament was forced to abolish shortly after. The stone is infamous for its moralistic, victim-blaming inscription, acting as a "warning to Female Virtue" and stating that Mary had "incautiously repaired to a scene of amusement, without proper protection" before she was murdered.
