The Charlotte Dymond Memorial

Description
A granite memorial obelisk erected on the edge of Roughtor on Bodmin Moor to mark the spot where 18-year-old domestic servant Charlotte Dymond was brutally murdered in April 1844. Her boyfriend, Matthew Weeks, was tried and hanged for the crime, though modern historians sometimes debate the safety of his conviction. The case became a Victorian sensation, resulting in this monument being raised by public subscription to warn young women of the dangers of wandering the moors. It was granted Grade II listed status by Historic England in 2018.
