This chilling "conscience stone" sits in the churchyard of the 12th-century St Andrew's Church on the Penrice Estate. In October 1829, 75-year-old Mary Kavanagh was found brutally beaten to death in her home. Her memorial features a deliberately blank space carved immediately after the words "who was Murdered by," intentionally left empty in a desperate bid to prick the conscience of the unknown killer and force a confession. The perpetrator was never brought to justice.
