The Morgan Lewis Murder Stone

1850 · Pantteg Cemetery, Godre'rgraig, Ystalyfera, Wales

Description

A highly unusual and direct murder stone marking the grave of 38-year-old Morgan Lewis. While the vast majority of murder stones either curse an unknown assailant or leave the perpetrator unnamed to avoid libel, this stone explicitly names his killer. Lewis died after a violent dispute where a concealed stone was thrown at his head. The Welsh poetic inscription translates directly to accuse his killer, David Davies, reading: "Here is the hiding place of Morgan, struck by a stone to the cranium: By mishap, this dreadful thing befell him. Take care and remember all this."
