The Clach-na-Cudainn (Stone of the Tubs)

Known as the palladium and primary charter stone of Inverness, this lozenge-shaped boulder translates from Gaelic as the 'Stone of the Tubs'. Historically, washerwomen would rest their water tubs on the stone while carrying them from the River Ness, but it rapidly grew into the definitive civic boundary and spiritual centre of the town. Local lore dictates that as long as the stone remains intact, Inverness will flourish. It is so deeply revered that it was historically bound in iron and is now preserved directly beneath the medieval Mercat Cross outside the Town House.
