Located along Chesterfield Avenue in Dublin's Phoenix Park, a small white gravel cross embedded in the ground marks the site of the infamous Phoenix Park Murders on May 6, 1882. Lord Frederick Cavendish, the newly appointed Chief Secretary for Ireland, and Thomas Henry Burke, the Permanent Undersecretary, were fatally stabbed by members of a republican splinter group known as the Irish National Invincibles. The cross and nearby commemorative markers memorialize one of the most consequential political assassinations in 19th-century British and Irish history.
