The Zero Milestone
1923 · The Ellipse, President's Park, Washington, D.C., USA
Description
Situated just south of the White House on the north edge of the Ellipse in Washington, D.C., this granite monument serves as the prime geodetic datum and initial point from which all road distances across the United States were historically measured. Dedicated in 1923 following a proposal by the Highway Transport Committee, it replaced earlier markers like the Jefferson Pier and acts as the ultimate national milestone.
